Learn more about The Bialystoker Synagogue in Rabbi Romm's radio interview with Nachum Segal [23 MB]

The Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton Towers was filled to capacity Sunday evening, December 5, 2004, as friends and congregants gathered to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Bialystoker Synagogue.

Guest of Honor--Speaker Sheldon Silver

The crowd of more than 400 enjoyed a sumptuous smorgasbord and dinner while listening to words of praise for one of the shul’s longstanding members, the Honorable Sheldon Silver, Speaker of the New York State Assembly, who was the dinner’s guest of honor.  Rabbi Zvi Romm presented Mr. Silver with a specially prepared art piece incorporating his nickname, Shelly, into the Hebrew word for Jerusalem.

Installation of Rabbi Zvi Romm

It was at the dinner, too, that Rabbi Zvi Romm was formally installed as the congregation’s fifth spiritual leader.  Dinner attendees were honored by the presence of many distinguished rabbinical leaders, including Rabbi Reuven Feinstein, Rabbi Yeshaya Siff, and Rabbi Mordechai Willig, all of whom praised Rabbi Romm for his work in the community.  HaRav Feinstein gave a wonderful dvar Torah. Rabbi Siff presented Rabbi Romm with a unique, ketubah-style document, specially crafted for the event by the renowned sofer, Simcha Beck, attesting to Rabbi Romm’s contribution to Jewish life on the Lower East Side, and signed by all of the local rabbinical leaders.

Torah Crown in Memory of Rabbi Yitzchok Singer z"l

Jacob Goldman, the synagogue’s president, also made a special presentation of a magnificent silver Torah crown to the family of the shul’s late rabbi, Rabbi Yitzchok Singer.  Rabbi Baruch Singer accepted the crown on behalf of the family.  The crown will sit atop the Torah scroll that is read on Shabbos morning in the shul as an eternal tribute to the spiritual contributions made by Rabbi and Rebbetzin Singer to the community.

Video Presentation by Elliot Caplan and Pictorial History edited by Mareleyn Schneider

Dinner was capped by an outstanding video presentation created by congregant and Academy Award winning documentary producer, Elliot Caplan.  And throughout the dinner, attendees enjoyed their evening keepsake, “The Bialystoker Synagogue: In Celebration of 125 Years,” a full length, hard covered book lovingly designed and edited by Dr. Mareleyn Schneider.

Thanks to Dinner Committee

The Honorable Martin Shulman served as master of ceremonies for the dinner, whose success was due in large part to the herculean efforts of the dinner committee, headed by Norman Dawidowicz and Leonard Greher.  Committee members Moshe Davidowitz, Dov Goldman, Jacob Goldman, Juda Englemayer, Gerry Nagel, Yosef Peretz, Sheila Rubenfeld, Mareleyn Schneider, Martin Shulman, Mayer Sinensky, Marion Tuchman, Ben Tuchman, and Karen Wolfson, along with the shul’s office staff, Annie Glassberg and Aviva Mermelstein, worked tirelessly for months to ensure that the evening was a fitting commemoration of the glories that are the Bialystoker Synagogue.
