IN MEMORIAM

Herman Gewanter, A”H

This shabbos we begin to re-learn the second cycle of pirkei avos.  As we are gathered to show our ultimate respect and love for our esteemed ritual director, our friend, our relative-Reb Avraham Tzvi Gewanter-we note the poignant appropriateness of mishneh tes vav:

Shamai omer:  Assei sorasechah kevah; emor me'at ve'asei harbeh; ve'hevei mekabel es kol ha'adam be'sever panim yafos.

Shamai notes:  Set aside specific times for your torah study; speak few words and involve yourself in great labor; and greet everyone with a welcoming expression.

We recall Reb Gewanter's quiet unassuming demeanor, his easygoing self-assurance in performing the most complicated rituals, his knowledge of nusach tefillah and his love for davening.  Over the decades, we recall his presence at the Rabbi's table at each learning seder:  Assei sorasechah kevah.  His unwavering attendance through the years, the decades-never faltering, up and down Grand Street, how many times each day, every day, over the decades to involve himself in his life's work, his spiritual passion-No matter what the weather, no matter how he must have felt deep down inside during difficult times-never ever complaining, or giving any indication of a personal need-He steeped himself in learning, in torah, ve'avodah ve'gemilus chasadim.

Reb Avraham was quiet, but with a sharp sense of humor, a twinkle in the eye-no idle words, never devarim be'tailim.  He toiled, he shlepped; he set up, he cleared away; he recited kaddish, he learned, he davened, he watched, he took notes, he kept track of all accounts, he monitored the life of the shul in its every dimension.  He persevered.  No job was too minor-Reb Avraham tended to every aspect of the shul life with complete personal commitment and selfless devotion.  And through it all, as he kept vigil over the shul, as he cared for us all, I cannot recall a harsh word to anyone-he was always interested in fulfilling his holy work, his ritual responsibilities, in his learning, in providing and serving others.  Emor me'at ve'assei harbeh.

When did Avraham Tzvi ever show a sign of thinking of himself?  What a tribute to an individual who devoted his life to ritual direction, to the responsibilities of making sure that every congregant's ritual needs were satisfied, that all chiyuvim were fulfilled, that all members were recognized-that no one would be overlooked and that the needs of the individuals would be balanced by the concern for the kehillah, for the good of the tzibur.  What an accomplishment to note-that in acquitting himself of these congregational responsibilities, Reb Avraham remained the calm at the center; he radiated warmth and good feeling.  In distributing kibbudim, he succeeded in a job that is tipped towards disaster; in an area where egos sometimes get the better of sound judgement, Reb Avraham was the master.  He made each congregant feel as if he or she were the center of the synagogue, that his or her ritual needs would be fulfilled with dignity and compassion and halachic exactitude.  Be'sever panim yafos.

Wherever we look in this majestic beis mikdash me'at, there is not a nook nor a corner where we cannot associate Reb Avraham.  We recall his incessant labors in the shul-the first to open the doors for the first minyan, the one to lock up after the last shiur.  Yes, his life was devoted to his family-to his wife Gussey, his daughter Malkie and son-in-law Moshe-and to his two devoted grandsons-Aharon Dovid and Chaim Leib.  The devotion, care and love that bound this family into a beautiful and strong dynamic was evident at every moment.  They are inseparable-and they provided incessant loving care during these final years of illness and struggle.  And despite the difficult times and the trials and the vigils and the sleepless nights, we all somehow felt that Reb Avraham would always be here, that he could never leave his post.

Very recently, as we began sefiras ha'omer and, even interestingly enough, as we continued throughout the omer, I recall an amazing phenomenon that is unique, I think, to the Bialystok shul and that extends way beyond sefiras ha'omer and into myriad crannies of synagogue life here in our shul, in our collective, communal memories.  This phenomenon demonstrates the staggering presence of absence.

At the time after ma'ariv when it is customary for the Rabbi to recite the berachah for sefiras ha'omer, over the years, we have become accustomed to wait for Reb Avraham's resounding announcement, after the traditional klap-sefiras ha'omer.  For forty-nine services this past cycle, not one evening passed in which the entire congregation did not wait-awkwardly-not knowing what to do-until some stand-in, some bimkom, some well intentioned, but non-initiated upstart could work up the courage to squeak forward a call to count.  While the berachah followed with accurate nusach and the omer was upheld, the feeling that we had participated in our Bialystok ritual experience was left to the void.  There was no kiyum ha'ma'asseh.

We are no longer whole.  If we all remain silent, many of us can still hear Reb Avraham Tzvi's beautiful tefillos.  If we listen hard, can we recall his inspiring kedushah for musaf-his muszhitzah na'aritzichah?  Can we recall his Ke'vodoh maleh olam?  If we strain our ears, can we still hear his beautiful Af b'ri?  I recall him in his kittle standing right there in front of us, leading us through ne'ilah, through countless yamim noraim.  His nigunim for Hallel-his na'a'nuim-his atah yetzartah.  So many moments; so many beautiful sounds, so many inspiring melodies, so many memorable nigunim.  Echoes of the past resound through this great sanctuary.

To this day, how many here realize how many of the yomim noraim nigunim originate in Reb Avraham's service from decades ago?  How many of us still hear his voice in the background even though the current ba'al tefillah is chanting his own tune.  Reb Avraham's u'nesaneh tokef remains the center of our recollection and appreciation.  He would be holding the machzor in the palm of his left hand.  He would be wearing the high white hat of the chazzan-his right hand would be leading and gesticulating to his melody-his body would be swaying and undulating to the rhythms of the nigun.  Mi yichyeh, u'mi yamus.

Shamai omer:  Assei sorasechah kevah; emor me'at ve'asei harbeh; ve'hevei mekabel es kol ha'adam be'sever panim yafos.

IN MEMORIAM

Seymour Winitz, A”H

1936-2006

Staff Writer

Shortly before the Pesach holiday, a caring son, valued member, neighbor and friend, Seymour Winitz, A”H, was niftar after a long illness.  Seymour, an only child of the late Emmanuel Winitz, A”H, and Bertha Winitz, tibodel l’chaim, was born in New York City and was a life-long resident of the Lower East Side. After attending  the Yeshiva Rabeinu Shlomo Kluger and Yeshiva University High School for Boys, Mr. Winitz pursued an accounting degree and enjoyed a professional career as an Accountant both in  the private and public sectors.

Seymour  Winitz was a long-standing Recording Secretary and Officer of the Bialystoker’s Board of Directors. The shul members and officers always valued Seymour’s copious Minutes of the many meetings over the years. His work product, produced voluntarily, reflected his unique personality, namely, his professionalism and  tremendous care and attention to detail.

Seymour was much more than a regular mispallel. Known affectionately as the Candy Man, Seymour always kept a supply of treats for the children in shul during the Shabbos and Yom Tov services. He cared about the “small stuff” such as  making sure boxes of facial tissue were always conveniently placed  throughout the shul for those in need  and was concerned about the physical upkeep of the building. Under Seymour’s watchful eye, windows had to be closed at the conclusion of the davening  to prevent water penetration and animal visitors (squirrels and birds). An early riser, Seymour routinely led the mispallelim in the recitation of pesukei d’zimra during Shacharis every shabbos morning.  During the Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur services, the kehillah always appreciated Seymour’s traditional role in announcing the pages to enable the mispallelim to follow along. Concerned about shul decorum and Kavod HaRav, Seymour’s famous cry,  “Wait for the Rabbi!”,  was a telling reminder to the assembled at a kiddush following the davening to respectfully await the arrival of Harav Singer, z”tl.

Seymour had a quirky sense of humor, seemed to know everyone’s birthdays and always had a story to tell about the Lower East Side Jewish community. Kind hearted, Seymour frequently went out of his way to do a favor or an act of chesed. He would often give driving lessons to neighborhood residents, gratis. Listening to classical music while driving his car around the neighborhood, Seymour actively sought out friends and neighbors and would kindly offer them a lift even it the trip took him out of his way.

Seymour Winitz was punctilious in his observance of the mitzvos and would frequently ask Harav Singer, z”tl, questions exhibiting his attention to detail and his intense desire to carefully adhere to the dictates of the Torah. Seymour was also a loving and devoted son to his parents and fulfilled the mitzva of kibud av v’em with every fiber of his being. Until the onset of his illness several years ago, Seymour was available “24/7" to attend to his beloved mother’s needs.

Seymour will always be remembered as a person who was concerned with taking care of his parents, being a proud and observant Jew and serving as a devoted member of the Bialystoker Kehilah.  He was a great friend and neighbor to many residents of Cooperative Village and will be missed. Yehi zichro u’boruch.

SHAVUOS YIZKOR APPEAL

The Shul's response to our recent Shavuos appeal was truly amazing.  To date, we have raised over $12,000 from the appeal, with even more in pledges.  Additionally, we were able to dedicate our learning on Shavuos night (which, as always, draws a large and enthusiastic crowd) to the memories of so many individuals, and Yizkor itself proceeded efficiently and decorously.  It is with great appreciation that we express our thanks to all our esteemed mispallelim who participated in this outstanding endeavor.
